What the prosecutor testified about the pressures she received – Papagelopoulos’ questions and the tensions
Ioanna Mandrou
Rain of questions from the defense of former minister Dimitris Papagelopoulos was accepted by the prosecutor of appeals during her testimony before the Special Court Eleni Raikou, one of a total of three public prosecutors who have denounced the former minister for interference in their work.
The public prosecutor, initially responding to questions from the President of the Court Vasilikis Iliopoulos, regarding the dialogue she had with Dimitris Papagelopoulos, when he, as the witness claims, pressured her to send the Novartis file on political figures to the Parliament .
President. Explain to us. With what mental process, the sentence said to you by Dem. Papagelopoulos “you have and you give” was interpreted as an exhortation to fabricate evidence?
Eleni Raikou. I didn’t say anywhere that he asked me to fabricate items. I just gathered from our conversation that that’s what he meant. That’s the impression he gave me, and that’s what an average prosecutor would form.
Mr. Rodousakis (advocate of Papagelopoulos). Why does Papagelopoulos’ demand to send the Novartis case file to the Parliament constitute an act of cover-up?
Elena Raikou. What should I send an empty case file? Since I had no information about politicians.
Chairman. You tell us that the then government was supportive of your project. He was the only one who had his way…
Eleni Raikou.
I told you. Papagelopoulos had his own agenda. What he wanted was for the file to go to the Parliament “here and now”.
Ippokrates Mylonas (advocate of Papagelopoulos).
Apart from the dialogue in which you say that he urgently asked you to send the file to the Parliament, did he tell you anything else?
Elena Raikou. He was asking about affairs. He was saying. What about him? Is it lame will you leave him? I wasn’t paying attention. I felt satisfied if the investigations confirmed what he wanted. Otherwise he would set up reports.
Papagelopoulos questions.
During the process there were moments of tension, mainly during the examination of the prosecutor by Dimitris Papagelopoulos himself, while at other times the process went beyond the limits of the Special Court’s authority with questions to the witness regarding her relations with the defendant minister.
Dec. Papagelopoulos.
You addressed me as “Dimitris” or “minister”. Do you know what Mrs. Touloupaki, whom you dragged away as my instrument, calls me, even now? He calls me “Mr. Prosecutor” because I want him more than the minister.
Eleni Raikou.
I also called you Rasputin to everyone. You had never seen Rasputin before.
Dim. Papagelopoulos. When you returned from business trips, did you bring me gifts?
Eleni Raikou. Never. Besides, I didn’t go on any business trip.
Dim. Papagelopoulos. Do you see that tie? I wore it because you brought it to me.
Eleni Raikou. Me?E, shame.
However, the President of the Court Vasiliki Iliopoulou tried to run the whole process as the lawyer of Dimitris Papagelopoulos insisted on detailed questions that had already been answered by the witness. The trial continues next Tuesday.
