The intervention of the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Isidoros Dogiakos caused by the acquittal of the 30-year-old a few days ago by the Court of Chalkida, who had been accused of abusing a kitten in a tavern in Edipsos.
The young man who had lured the unsuspecting kitty with a fish to approach him had kicked her throwing her into the sea sparking outrage on social media and animal-loving citizens.
The incident that happened last May caused the personal reaction of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, and prosecutorial intervention, which led to the prosecution and trial of the 30-year-old perpetrator.
The trial took place on October 19 in Chalkida, the city’s Three-member Criminal Court and led to the acquittal of the perpetrator.
The Prosecutor of the Supreme Court requested the decision of the Court in order to study whether it was incorrect as the implementation of the animal protection law is also a priority of the prosecutor’s office. After all, the law for the protection of animals that came into force recently has sometimes led – because animal abuse is unfortunately a common phenomenon – to the imposition of fines and sentencing of the perpetrators in an attempt to reinforce that animals are sentient beings, they suffer , they suffer, they understand and our responsibility is to protect them and their well-being whether we are animal lovers or not. Love for animals is a matter of culture.
