Patrols and… “arrests” of wild boars in Aegaleo, Haidari and Schistos

Patrols and… “arrests” of wild boars, mainly in parts of the Athens-Corinth National Road, have been carried out for the last month by crews of the Environmental Association of Municipalities of Athens Piraeus (PESYDAP) and the Aigaleo Forestry Department.

According to the president of PESYDAP Grigoris Gourdomichalis, at the moment herds of wild boars are active on both sides of the National Road from the height of Haidari to Lake Koumoundouros, with an obvious tendency of the animals to pass from Mount Poikilo to Mount Aigaleo and in the region of Schistos.

Frequent presences of large numbers of animals are observed in areas next to the Attica Psychiatric Hospital in Dafni, as well as in the Diomedes Botanical Garden on the opposite side of Ethniki, where the vegetation conditions favor wild boars.

So far, levels of the Aigaleo Forestry and the Civil Protection Group of PESYDAP have managed to “capture” painlessly with traps more than 10 wild boars, which were then removed and released in remote forest areas outside urban areas.

The biggest problem is found in the night crossings that wild boars attempt perpendicular to an expressway, such as the National Highway.

In an attempt to limit the chances of serious traffic accidents, as has happened in other regions of the country, warning signs have been placed on both sides of the National Road, especially at the height of Haidari.

“Drivers should be especially careful, especially at night, while the residents of the areas should under no circumstances feed, approach or disturb the wild boars in any way. Also walkers, and especially those accompanying dogs, should be very careful if they meet such animals, so as not to provoke the defensive reflexes of the wild boars,” emphasizes Mr. Gourdomichalis.
