Thessaloniki: Handcuffs to “pirates” of subscription channels – They had made more than 147,000 euros

The two individuals were arrested on charges of professional copyright infringement and conspiracy to commit computer fraud

Yesterday morning in Thessaloniki, police officers of Department for Combating Human Trafficking.

A case file was filed against the arrested person for violation of the Law on Intellectual Property by profession and for computer fraud by complicity.

Specifically, from Organized Crime and Human Trafficking Sub-Directorate of the Thessaloniki Security Directoratean investigation was conducted to identify individuals who are active in the field of “piracy” of subscription channels.

As part of the investigation, it was found that, the 47-year-old man had posted at least eleven (11) advertisements for the sale of electronic equipment that illegally provided access to subscription services. In addition, it was established that this equipment was supplied by a 50-year-old citizen, who was also arrested as being involved in the case.

After an organized operation with the assistance of employees of the Society for the Protection of Audiovisual Works and in the presence of a judicial officer, a search was carried out at the homes of the two arrested persons, where they found and seized a total of:

-(33) media players,
-(18) data storage units (portable disks, internal disks and usb),
-Stun gun and cartridges owned by the 50-year-old arrested,
-(18) bank cards,
– Packs of connection packs, SIM cards and SD memory cards,
-A sum of money (28,665) euros and
-(8) mobile phones.

From the preliminary investigation it emerged that, from March 2021 until November of this year, the 47-year-old, using a pseudonym, had sent more than (45) parcels throughout Greece through a courier company.

The illegal financial benefit he obtained amounts to (147,000) euros (not including the sale of electronic devices), while the corresponding loss in lost revenue of the subscription companies exceeds 400,000 euros.

Those arrested will be taken to the competent Prosecutor, while investigations continue to clarify the scope of their action.
