“The Attic Vineyard, one of the oldest in the world, can uniquely combine wine, culture and history” said the Deputy Minister of Tourism

On Sunday 11/13, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Sofia Zaharakis, organized a tour of the wineries of the Attiki Vineyard, the largest single vineyard in the country, on the occasion of World Wine Tourism Day.

The Deputy Minister’s first stop was the estate Oinotria Gi – K. Lazaridis, in Kapandriti. Along with Mrs. Zacharaki was the Secretary General of Rural Development and Food, Mrs. Kalogirou, and the President of the National Interprofessional Vine and Wine Organization, Mr. Konstantinos Efstathiou. The visit included a tour of the Estate’s wine museum and tasting of the wines.

Then followed a visit to Markou Vineyards, in Paania, where a special emphasis was placed on Sabvatiano – the most characteristic variety of the region.

The trek was completed with a visit to the Nikolos Winery in Koropi, a family winery known for its innovation in the production of sparkling retsina.

The attendance of people at the open wineries was particularly important, and indicative of the success of the great effort made by the agencies in collaboration with the Ministry to strengthen wine tourism in our country.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Sofia Zaharaki, stated in this regard:

“On World Wine Tourism Day, we honor and highlight one of the most dynamic branches of our tourism. Greek wine tourism, in the last few years, is gaining more and more ground, having to offer an unparalleled experience to the visitor. As a Ministry, we have prioritized strengthening the dynamics of wine tourism, with our special ongoing initiative to highlight Greek wine and the opportunities for the development of wine tourism, the wine tourism trip organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the EOT and the Regions and the which, already, measures three stops in three wine-producing regions of the country. At the same time, we are advancing our initiatives for the development of a special platform and the institutionalization of awards for the wineries that bear our mark. The effort has begun to bear fruit, as we now count more than 100 wineries with the Visitable Winery badge, a record number for our country. But, we don’t stop here. Our ambition is to strengthen this dynamic even more, and to combine wine tourism with even more thematic and alternative forms of tourism. In particular, the Attic Vineyard, one of the oldest in the world, can uniquely combine wine, culture and history, offering a unique journey through wine and time. We continue the effort for a higher quality, more balanced and more sustainable Greek tourism.”

In Greece, the World Wine Tourism Day events are coordinated by the National Interprofessional Vine and Wine Organization (EDOAO), under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, while regional associations participate wine producers of our country, Vineyards of Attica, Central Greece, Wines of Northern Greece, Vineyards of the Peloponnese, of the Aegean Islands Winegrowers and the network of Winemakers of Crete.
