“The monitoring of the events around the Polytechnic took place in silence, in the dark, through the lowered wooden shutter with the window open, with bated breath” – The film by Nikos A. Vernikos

From the 14th to the 17th of November 1973, from the window of a corner room on the 1st floor of the “Acropolis” hotel, Nikos A. Vernikos secretly filmed the historical events taking place inside and outside the Polytechnic.

Watching the events was muted “with bated breath” through the lowered wooden shutter with the window open. The night shots of the tank attack on the gates of the Polytechnic and the bloodshed that followed – although dark (all the lights were off) – chill the heart and the blood.

The video document – which was originally in black and white but has now taken a color form – was posted today on his personal Facebook account by the Deputy Minister of Culture & Sports, responsible for modern culture issues, Nikolas Giatromanolakis, on the day of the anniversary of the Polytechnic.

“Midnight Friday 16th to Saturday 17th November at the corner of the Acropole was parked a tank waiting to intervene. The standing driver’s helmet reached the bottom of the corner window.

Shortly before the operation at the Polytechnic and while there was complete silence, a small noise was created in the room by the friends, competing students and the telephone. The soldier turned the light beam of the tank’s searchlight on the facade of the hotel, trying to locate the source of the noise. He stopped for a moment at the dark window of our room behind him and a little above, with the roll down. The light of the searchlight came through the cracks.

The soldier was trying to figure out where the noise was coming from that stood out from the sound of gunfire. As it moved it illuminated the walls and especially the ceiling of the room in all directions. The breathing of those present in the room stopped” the filmmaker described the dramatic moments.
