In his apology, the 46-year-old confessed to his act, stressing that he was carried away by the rage caused by the violent act against his daughter.

The sentence of a 46-year-old Bulgarian accused of killing his 53-year-old compatriot with an ax in retaliation for raping his 29-year-old daughter has been reduced.

With the recognition of two mitigating circumstances, the Mixed Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki – where the case was tried in second instance – sentenced him to 12 years to life in prison, having previously found him guilty of manslaughter. The two mitigating factors he received relate on the one hand to his subsequent good behavior, and on the other hand to the fact that he was prompted to his act by the victim’s inappropriate behavior.

In his apology, the 46-year-old confessed his deed, stressing that he was carried away by the rage caused by the violent act against his daughter.

With the same decision – after all – both his daughter (who accused him of rape) and his wife, who had been sentenced at first instance to 15 years in prison for complicity in the murder, were acquitted. The Court accepted their claim that they followed the 46-year-old to prevent the murder. Mother and daughter had been released on restrictive conditions pending the Court of Appeal.

The crime was revealed in February 2015, when the 53-year-old, marked in his homeland for various acts, including two rapes, was found dead in a drainage ditch in a rural area of Nea Zichni, Serres. The victim suffered repeated blows from an ax, while the characteristic tattoos on his body contributed to his identification.

It was preceded, a year and a half earlier, by the complaint of the 29-year-old (20 years old at the time) that she was raped in an isolated mountainous area near the Greek-Bulgarian border, where the victim had allegedly dragged her along with her mother and a third woman.

For involvement in the murder, two more of their compatriots were charged, a man and his wife who were irrevocably sentenced – respectively – to life imprisonment (the first) and 12 years’ imprisonment (the second). They were never arrested and are considered fugitives, while it is estimated that they fled to Bulgaria.
