As the mayor of Thessaloniki said “it is unthinkable to develop high speeds in an urban fabric, which endanger the safety of pedestrians”

The death of the 21-year-old student in the center of Thessaloniki due to being carried away was mentioned tonight from the floor of the municipal council by the mayor, Konstantinos Zervas, appealing to the drivers to observe the Road Traffic Code and to the State to take measures so that Emma ” he is the latest victim on the city’s streets.”

Mr. Zervas, after expressing his heartfelt condolences to the family of the 21-year-old, said that “it is unthinkable to develop high speeds in an urban fabric, which endanger the safety of pedestrians. On the question of abandonment I have no words to say. It is beyond all description and thought.”

“I appeal to all drivers to avoid high speeds, to follow the KOK. It is unthinkable that lives are being lost in the city center. But also in the State to see immediately what we have to do. Electronic surveillance may have to be instituted. It doesn’t go any further. Immediately here and now there should be control everywhere, especially in the central points. There are many drivers without licenses, cars without insurance and without maintenance. “Magic and impunity cannot prevail on the Greek streets,” he emphasized.

He referred to the efforts of his administration on the issue of road safety. “We are taking specific steps, we pay attention to mobility issues, we have the new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan with the aim of reducing the number of cars in our city by 2030. We strengthen micro-mobility, for bicycles and skates, we systematically improve the road network with asphalt pavements” he said and added: “Along with renovations, sidewalks, smart crossings and signage that needs maintenance, we make the most of the capabilities of the Municipal Police. As important as infrastructure is, the number one issue is driving behavior and road culture.”

Finally, the mayor said that campaigns should be carried out to change “the culture at the wheel, to have respect and responsibility”.
