The 28-year-old was jailed for seven years for setting fire to two caravans and two sheds in December 2014.

A 28-year-old Roma man who has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the arson caused to two caravans and two shacks in Karakonero opposite the camp, was arrested the day before yesterday by police officers from the Security Directorate of Rhodes and OPKE, in December of 2014.

His capture 28 years old it happened as the appeal he had filed against the first court sentence that had been imposed on him (7 years imprisonment), was rejected as unsupported in February 2021, by the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Dodecanese.

More detail, the 28-year-old but also a 48-year-old of the same sex, were referred to a trial at the behest of the Criminal Council of Rhodes and in the same case the 47-year-old wife of the 48-year-old Roma was also accused, for which the judicial council decided not to press charges against her (they are accused of moral complicity in arson with intent by which could result in a danger to people and to severe damage to foreign property), as well as the –then- 17 year old son of, for whom the case file was separated as a minor to be tried by the competent court.

Yes, according to the case file the minor is said to be the one who set the fire at one in the morning on December 6, 2014 opposite the Roma camp in Karakonero, and which expanded from the collapse that started to two mobile homes and also a makeshift residence, in which people were sleeping, including minor children.

And the Roma adults are accused of preventing the owner of the shacks from approaching his house.

According to information, being examined by the staff of its investigative department Fire Service the four involved allegedly claimed that it all started when people from another family of the same sex broke into the 47-year-old’s car, causing tempers to rise and a wild fight that resulted in the fire that the 28-year-old allegedly set in one of the sheds .

The flames quickly spread at around one in the morning on Saturday 6th December 2014 resulting in a total of two sheds and two caravans being burnt to the ground. In an investigation carried out by the police, they located and arrested the Roma family and the 28-year-old, who all lived together, and handed them over to the investigative department of the Fire Service for further investigation.

Criminal charges were brought against them and after their apologies the mother, father and son were released without conditions, while the 28-year-old was given the restrictive condition of appearing twice a month at the police station of his area. In December 2018, the case was heard at first instance, the 28-year-old and the 48-year-old did not appear before the court, resulting in the Kos Joint Jury trying them in absentia and imposing a 7-year prison sentence on each with the appeal having suspensive effect.

The two men’s appeals were set to be heard on February 1, 2021 by the Dodecanese Mixed Court of Appeal, however as none of the defendants appeared before it, the applications were dismissed as unsupported.
Thus, both the 28-year-old and the 48-year-old now retain the original sentence of seven years imprisonment imposed on each of them, which they will have to serve.
