“Corpses in Pompeian condition. Burned babies, burnt mothers. Everything was burning. It was an unimaginable thing,” said a witness at the trial for the tragedy in Mati, describing the conditions prevailing in the area on the afternoon when the fire engulfed the area.

The trial for the deadly fire in Mati continues with statements from people who lost loved ones in the flames.

In the proceedings today, there was a reaction from a defense attorney for the movement of relatives of victims who yesterday placed photos of the people who lost in the audience seats. One of the defense attorneys, doctor of law Thrasyvoulos of Kontaxis referring to the “tolerance of the court” in yesterday’s action by the victims, he spoke of “procedural deviation”. The criminologist told the judges that “your impartiality towards the accused is shaken. An absolute invalidity of the procedure is created”, since the court did not demonstrate “calmness and apathy” as it should”. to declare self-exclusion. You have registered a mortgage for a tort action.. We are not in the people’s courts of Tehran.”

Chairman: I don’t understand why all this is happening. This happened yesterday. Nothing happened today.

Contact: And what with it; I don’t understand why all this happened yesterday.

Chairman: Was the court perceived to be biased?

Contact: The definition of this feeling.

The court, after interrupting the proceedings for a while, in order to deliberate, came back with the president announcing that “there is no question of abstention or self-exclusion for any member of the composition. Each of us can carry out his duties impartially.”

On the witness stand were two women who lost loved ones without being able to do the slightest thing to prevent the deaths, since, as they said, no one informed them of the danger of the fire.

Mrs. Evanthia Sideri, who lost her mother and husband in the fire, described the situation with the charred people as “Pompeii”, while as she mentioned after what she experienced “and being saved is as if I have died”.

“Around six o’clock I see smoke. I’m running on the computer.. closed. The power had gone out. My daughter smells smoke and because she had a past experience she has a panic attack. “We will burn, we will die!”. I froze. Going out. Cars everywhere .. My daughter Persephone was running in front, behind me and my mother and further back my husband. At some point we lost him. We entered the path. My mom at that time says “I won’t make it, leave me”. I tell her let’s go. We reach the steps and suddenly my daughter shouts “mom you’re on fire!”. I throw clothes and fall into the sea, I see seconds before my daughter grabs my mother and pulls her into the sea. I lost them. A black veil fell everywhere. I found a dry place and sat down. I screamed for hours. And when I was saved it’s like I’ve died.. Burned babies, burnt mothers. Everything was burning. It was an unimaginable thing. We were completely alone. After hours a large boat came. Let there be destruction. “Burnts first!” to shout My husband came in black, he says “my love” and passed out. I call my daughter, she says I can’t find grandma. I started looking on dry land, in the sea. I saw them all. Corpses in Pompeian condition. We lost my mother and my husband, a few months later he collapsed from it and died in the hospital.. I am asking for justice for the memory of my mother, my brother, Chrysa Spiliotis who was my friend for all those who lost their lives unjustly”.

In her own testimony Mrs. Magdaleni Tsekou, who opened today’s proceedings, described how she last saw her father when they separated outside their home in Mati to escape.

The woman, whose home is just 200 meters near Marathon Avenue, testified that she took her parents to leave when she saw the sky darkening and flames approaching. “The wind was very strong. He seemed to be going New Far. Fire never passes the Marathon, we used to say. The fire is getting stronger. A pinecone passes the Marathon. My father shouts “we’re leaving now!”. We collected papers. The power had gone out. At some point the flames come closer. “You and mom in front and me behind you with the car,” he tells me. Rendezvous in Rafina..I’m leaving with the car and my mother. The road is full of fire. A man jumps on the hood of the car. I put him in. Fire ahead. He tells me “go ahead, we’ll burn”. I tell him “if I drive by we will catch fire”. He jumped and ran towards the sea. I don’t know what happened. I made a U-turn, went in the opposite direction of Marathon and started calling my father. He doesn’t pick it up. People are shouting. “The fire will burn you, run don’t stay here!”. All the way I have not seen anyone in charge. No siren, no bell, nothing! Only people were shouting. At the intersection with Rafina, I pick up my father again. He doesn’t pick it up..”

As the witness said, at some point because a rescuer answered her father’s phone, they learned that theif they went to the Evangelism. “He had 85% external burns and 35% internal, it was one of the worst cases. They intubated him. We were told to wait. My father passed away on July 27th. From that afternoon when we left home, I never got to speak to him again. My father tried to help a family who had a disabled person. They were trapped inside the car, which had caught fire. My father crawled to the ground. This happened at 19.30 and by 21.00 they were lying down. I know this because the neighbor managed to survive and gave an interview and I learned about it. Her disabled husband was charred together with the family of four whose car was in it. Later she also died from complications.”
