Domi Elaiona began operating as a refugee camp on August 16, 2015 on a previously empty plot of land belonging to the Municipality of Athens on Polykarpou Street

The site of the refugee accommodation structure in Eleonas was handed over to the Municipality of Athens today, which was formally closed today.

“Elaionas is a symbol of the time of crisis, a structure that today closes and returns to the citizens of Athens” said the Minister of Immigration and Asylum Notis Mitarakis.

“A huge area, almost 10 thousand acres, is given to its residents, to start a double reconstruction, which will simultaneously upgrade life in the center of the capital” said the prime minister, during his speech at the handover ceremony.

Mr. Mitsotakis spoke of a radical change in a very large area, of which almost half will be green and in the center of which will be the state-of-the-art stadium, “which the Athens team, Panathinaikos, is finally acquiring”.

He added that visitors will move there through open routes and smart means of transport, while there is provision for organized car parking, and at the same time, the surrounding roads will be freed from the traffic suffocation experienced by those who move in Kifissos today.
