What the Minister of Civil Protection said about the Nea Smyrna case and the robbery at the watch store in the center of Athens
At the time the double murder took place in Nea Smyrni, there should have been a patrol in the square, said the Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos on SKAI and on the show “Today” with Dimitris Oikonomou and Akis Pavlopoulos. At the same time, he added that prehistory shows that the robbers in the watch store in Kolokotroni will be found, while he spoke of a phobic syndrome that is possessed by EL.AS.
“The event in Nea Smyrni is a very shocking event. It’s a murder, Sunday night in the world and I understand that this sows concern,” the minister emphasized and continued: “On Sunday night, the DIAS patrol should have been there. I have asked the police to overcome any kind of phobic syndrome and strengthen their effective presence everywhere. There was a phobic syndrome in the Nea Smyrni incident.”
Regarding the settling of accounts, he emphasized: “the police’s assessment is that it is a clearing between people of the night who belong to the Albanian Mafia, it may have other kinds of ramifications, for which we may also have international cooperation, but not I’m going to answer you more specific questions.”
Regarding the robbery at the watch store in Kolokotroni, Mr. Theodorikakos emphasized that “there was a patrol which arrived within a minute. Usually in such cases the police find the perpetrators, this is what history shows. Investigations are ongoing. Investigations do not stop, especially when it comes to murder, only when the perpetrator is found.”
At the same time, Mr. Theodorikakos noted that “I did a specific check and I have asked the Chief of Police to return to the service of DIAS 150 seconded to other services. There has been a clear mandate to increase patrols and it has been achieved for a long time. I believe that in this area for a serious period of time there was this kind of phobia and to deal with it they intervened personally. We have a problem of police sufficiency in the Attica basin, where 30% of the police force is located”
Regarding the presence of the Police, he said: “I want to be straight. Since the first day I took office, my main concern has been for the police to strengthen their presence in the neighborhoods. Is it true that it was enhanced or not?
The 74 murders that have taken place this year are the fewest on an annual basis in the last 11 years. The homicide clearance rate this year is the highest it’s ever been, almost 90%.”
The minister also mentioned that next month there will be crises in EL.AS. and it is expected that there will be reclassifications: “It is obvious that everyone is evaluated. In one month there are the ELAS crises, I prefer that it needs to be done, it should be done in the crises as a whole”.
