Remember restaurants and bars that closed their doors in São Paulo in 2022

If, on the one hand, the year 2022 was full of openings of bars and restaurants –with the attenuation of the coronavirus pandemic and the possibility of more customers going out to eat and drink–, on the other hand, some houses could not stand it and had to close the doors in São Paulo.

For various reasons –many of them related to the pandemic– classic addresses that marked the city’s gastronomic and ethyl scene had to say goodbye to the clientele. The night, for example, became less hectic with the closure of places like Alberta3#. The city center also lost a historic point, the Paribar. There were also those who closed and opened again, as is the case of the Car Cemetery.

In terms of restaurants, the steakhouse Angélica Grill, also in downtown São Paulo, ended its activities after 26 years. There was also a classic Arab changing name and address.

RESTAURANTS

Angelica Grill

The steakhouse, known for its all-you-can-eat dishes served in an elegant hall decorated in shades of gold, ended in August after 26 years of activity. According to a publication by the restaurant on social networks, the address did not resist the crisis caused by the pandemic.

Rascal Factor

Ráscal’s Mediterranean cuisine project ended about two years after it opened, in 2020. Located in Conjunto Nacional, on Avenida Paulista, Fattoria gave way to another unit in the chain.

Homa

Awarded as one of the best vegetarian restaurants in São Paulo by the special O Melhor de São Paulo, by Sheet, the address ended its activities after four years, in September. According to José Barattino, chef at the house, the decision was made because Homa was not giving the expected results.

Mount Lebanon

The classic Arab restaurant, installed since 1973 in a building in the region of 25 de Março, in the center, had been temporarily closed in May to reappear at another address and with another name, in Moema, months later. But the plans did not work out and the address now works only for delivery.

Naia

After just one year of operation, the seafood restaurant run by chef Tuca Mezzomo ended its activities. The gaucho announced that he would dedicate the work to his other restaurant, Charco, awarded this year as one of the best in Latin America.

Oregon

Yet another victim of real estate speculation, the traditional hamburger joint, which had been operating since the 1960s, closed its doors in February, after the building it occupied, in Pinheiros, was sold to a developer.

BARS

The club, which had one of the best-known underground tracks in the capital, ended its activities in January this year, after 12 years of operation. What made the space located on Avenida São Luís, in the center, close its doors was the uncertainty generated by the pandemic, which made the movement fall. In April 2021, the house even ran a crowdfunding campaign, with the goal of raising BRL 93,000 in 40 days and keeping the doors open. The value, however, was not reached.

The wine bar, which opened in January 2021 during the pandemic, was intended to make wine more popular, with affordable prices. The environment occupied the garage of sommelière Lua Sampaio and closed the doors. Now, Sampaio makes content about wines on the internet, while he cannot find another space to open his bar.

Marola Bar

The beach-style bar on Rua dos Pinheiros closed in October this year, six months after opening. The house, opened in April, was owned by the same partners as Exquisito and Ciao Pizzeria Napolitana, close to Rua do Pinheiros.

The historical address of São Paulo’s bohemia closed its doors in September this year. Located in Praça Dom José Gaspar, in the center of São Paulo, it was considered the first place to place tables and chairs on the sidewalk. The bar had been run by Luiz Campiglia for 17 years, who said that one of the main reasons for the bar’s closure is the current violence in the area.
