The first Caretta turtles are already at sea, as the 2025 hatching period started earlier than ever as the Association for the protection of the ARCHELON Sea Turtle.

The first hatch of nest took place on July 9 in western Peloponnese – on the beach of Elea in Kyparissian The trick – and was the earliest in the 42 years of record and protection that ARCHELON has completed.

Many small turtles have managed to arrive safely at sea, signaling a dynamic start of the season in the Kyparissiakos nature protection area!

Two days later, on July 11, 2025, the first hatching of nest in Crete, on the beach of Afrathia was marked in its bay Messara. The program team in the area recorded the exit of the first small turtles, which were able to orient and reach the sea.

On the same day, the first hatch of nest was recorded in the vagina Hareon the beach of Daphne. The traces of a turtle, the first one this year to arrive at sea, gave the message of this year’s hatching season at Zakynthos National Park.

Behavioral Instructions – How to help turtles

As the hatching season evolves on the spawning beaches in Zakynthos, Kyparissiakos, Koroni, Laconian, Rethymnon, Chania and the Gulf of Messara, ARCHELON gives us clear instructions to help and protect these small creatures.

As the club points out: “Little turtles are extremely vulnerable and need our help to safely reach the sea.”

If you meet turtles:

  1. Don’t touch them – they must have minimal contact with people
  2. Do not throw them into the sea – it is crucial to follow the route on their own as water
  3. Avoid beach in the evening – they hatch usually night, they need quiet
  4. Close artificial lights on the beach – turtles are oriented with moonlight
  5. Do not use flash – artificial light can disorient them
  6. Protect them from the sun – shade them with your body or towel
  7. Remove obstacles or animals from their path – help them get to the sea without risks

According to ARCHELON: “We invite you to share the instructions with your friends, inform visitors and become involved in protecting this unique marine species. Together we can ensure that little turtles begin their journey to the sea with the best chances of survival. “
