Kabosu: The dog behind the popular meme has leukemia

The dog behind the famous meme “Doge” she is seriously ill, according to posts made on Instagram by her owner and kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato.

Specifically, the 17-year-old Shiba Inu suffers from chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood and bone marrow cancer, and cholangiohepatitis, an inflammation of the bile ducts, according to the Guardian. Although her appetite has returned and she is able to drink water, according to the doctor the dog is “in a very dangerous condition”. In a recent post, Sato commented: “I didn’t expect it to be this bad.”

In 2013 Kabosu became one of the most recognizable animals on the internet from a photo of her posing with folded legs and a strange expression. She has since become famous with her image inspiring, among others, the recently launched cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Elon Musk is one of Dogecoin’s best-known supporters, while the cryptocurrency has become a sponsor of English football team Watford, with the dog’s face printed on their jerseys.

Sato thanked the dog’s fans for their support, saying she “takes strength from everyone.”
