The announcement of the tender for the expansion project of Metro line 2 to Ilion officially announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The project, budget 550,000,000 euros, will be completed in 57 months from the day of signing the contract, i.e. in less than 5 years. Its operation is expected to significantly reduce access times to the center of Athens from the western districts (from Ilion to Omonia, in about 20 minutes).
In particular, it concerns the creation of a 4 km underground network from Anthoupoli to Agios Nikolaos, with three new stations. Two of the three stations will be built on Thivon Street, the first (Palatiani station) approximately 1300 m north of Anthoupoli station and the second (Ilion station) 1000 m north of the first. The third station (Ag. Nikolaos) is located on Agios Nikolaos Street in Ilion. At least 51,000 passengers are expected to travel daily.
The contract also includes the design and construction of an underground car park, which will have three underground levels and a total capacity of approximately 150 vehicles, as well as the construction and modernization of the Depot in Eleonas.
According to the announcement, the expression of interest in the project is set for February 28, 2023 and the unsealing of the participation envelopes on March 6, 2023.
The competition will take place in two stages: The first stage is the pre-selection-invitation of expression of interest by submitting a participation application. The second stage is the call for tenders and the assignment of the project.

A project, which will reach the old National Highway with three uneven junctions, in Schistos, in Shipyards in Skaramanga and, of course, the construction of the extension of Kymi Street, which will also begin in order to relieve the burdened traffic and provide a solution to the problems of the Metamorfosis Junction.
We continue intensively and consistently, the step-by-step implementation of our plan. Within 3.5 years we managed to tender projects worth more than 10 billion euros and to contract projects worth almost 5 billion euros. 2023 is the year in which we will run the big projects even faster in order to surpass even the goals we have set.”
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Giorgos Karagiannis noted that for the first time in many years, 2 major Metro projects will be built simultaneously in Athens

Extension of Line 2 to Ilion
The Line 2 Extension to Ilion project includes the preparation of the Final Design (FD), the Implementation Design (DE), the construction of the Civil Engineering works, the procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of the electromechanical and railway equipment, the maintenance of the Project, the training of the personnel and the supply of the main spare parts for the systems to be installed.
The extension it is about 4 km long. and includes three new Stations and their respective Ventilation Shafts.
The object also includes the construction of a Transfer Station (Underground car park), which has 3 underground levels with access via ramps, has a total capacity of approximately 150 vehicles with a direct passenger connection to the Metro.
Upgrade – Replacement of Existing Lines 2 & 3 Systems
Also, within the framework of this contract, the digital data transmission system will be upgraded / replaced in all the stations of Lines 2 and 3 of the Metro, while the announcement system will be upgraded / replaced in the stations of the Basic Project and the extensions (except the Piraeus extension). and will be connected to the corresponding systems of the Piraeus extension.
At least 51,000 passengers will be transported
In the immediate service area of ​​the new stations (distance up to 500m.) there are approximately 46,500 inhabitants and 5,500 jobs. The passenger traffic of the three stations is estimated to total 51,000 passengers per day.
With the implementation of the extension, the level of service for the passengers of these areas is significantly improved, as they depend to a large extent on Public Transport for their movements, while the area has been developing at an intense pace in recent years.
The topographic surveys for the extension in question have been completed, as well as the Geological, Geophysical and Geotechnical Surveys and Studies. Based on the above available data, the Preliminary design has been prepared and is currently being prepared by the services of ATTIKO METRO SA. the Pre-Study of the project.
The construction budget is estimated at 550,000,000 euros before VAT and is financed by the community funds.
