Premiere today for winter sales

On the first Sunday of the sales, i.e. January 15, shops will be able to be open throughout the territory from 11am to 8pm.

Premiere today, Monday January 9, 2023 for the winter sales that will last until February 28, 2023 and on which traders have placed high expectations.

On the first Sunday of the sales, i.e. January 15, shops will be able to be open throughout the territory from 11am to 8pm.

As the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Piraeus and the Regional Chamber Council of Attica, Vassilis Korkidis, told APE-MPE, the retail trade is doing “a lot” with discounts this year, and he expects a high buying interest for the next two months.

As he notes, “despite the string of accuracy and inflation, last year ended with an increase in consumption and in fact close to 12%, while it is estimated that overall festive turnover increased in December to 4 billion euros from 3.6 billion euros the previous years.

A recent survey of the markets of Attica shows that the priorities of 55% of consumers during the festive period were clothes and shoes, 45% food, 43% toys, 37% cosmetics, 28% technology products, 25% on branded products, 22% on drinks and 20% on various gifts.

During the winter sales period, the preferences remain the same with a larger percentage in branded clothing and footwear products and the addition of “white” appliances, electrical, electronic, furniture and all household items, which always have a primary role in the regular sales.”

Businesses, adds Mr. Korkidis, are used to presenting their products for sale at very favorable prices during the sales season, expecting on the one hand to “discount” the seasonal items and on the other hand to improve their liquidity.

The president underlines that “this year’s winter sales take place in a special period where the economy has strengthened with the government continuing to support households and businesses, which has increased the expectations of the commercial world who are hoping for a “warm” movement amid winter that is still expected.

Let’s not forget that the two-month timeframe of discounted low prices reduces inflation by up to one unit. At the same time, the long period of time gives the consumer the opportunity to use the time to evaluate the goods they want to buy.

We have said it too many times that the greatest folly and punishment is to try to fool the consumer. He has done his market research, he can do it very easily online and everything he wants to buy he has located, he has tracked it on price, so he knows in advance what is good for him to buy.

Bearing in mind that significant discounts will be offered, the commercial world hopes that the movement will be dynamically proportional to the start of the discount periods before the restrictions of the pandemic, while they may signal something different better given that the intermediate sales that acted “disruptively” in the shopping have been abolished interesting.

Of course, he underlines, traders continue to justifiably worry about energy costs, but also the feedback costs of their stores, given the large price increases in January in a range of products.

The president notes that, according to ELSTAT data, the retail trade sector, with the exception of supermarkets, measured total losses of more than 3.5 billion euros in the last two years of the winter sales and moved to disappointing levels for 8 out of 10 small and medium-sized traders, compared to usual turnover levels, pre-pandemic.

“So we are starting the winter sales of 2023 with the aim of recovering, but also to surpass, the turnover of 5.5 billion euros of the first two months of 2019” emphasizes Mr. Korkidis.
