For three years, everything seemed hazy for the 35-year-old, until he was “betrayed” by a mistake
A 35-year-old man was found in Zagora Pelion in the grip of the law due to his “recklessness”, as he said, who for three years pretended to be an accountant, even personally taking on his own clients without having the corresponding license to practice the profession.
Specifically, in 2016, the 35-year-old started working as an assistant accountant at the Women’s Agritourism Cooperative of Zagora. The recruitment was done through acquaintances and he was not asked for a degree and a license to practice a profession, as he himself, according to his words, was ashamed to admit that he had not completed his studies.
When entering the online environment of the Cooperative where he worked, the 35-year-old found that the previous accountant had left her professional accountant codes stored in the system. Using the woman’s details, he began personally taking on clients as an accountant and filing tax returns, which essentially had her own electronic “stamp”.
For three years, everything seemed hazy for the 35-year-old, who proceeded to abuse the codes in the early hours of the morning, so that the notifications that would come to the system of the accountant in question were “lost” among many others.
The mistake that betrayed him
In April 2019, a mistake by the 35-year-old in filing a tax return drew the attention of the woman’s colleague, who alerted her. Checking the notifications, she notices three names that don’t belong to her clients. The misuse of the codes is noticed and the 35-year-old is exposed, with the accountant filing a lawsuit against him.
But the Women’s Agritourism Cooperative of Zagora also threatened the 35-year-old with a lawsuit, and the latter returned, as a sign of remorse, the amount of 26,000 euros that corresponded to his entire salary for the three years he worked there.
“I was ashamed to say I didn’t have a degree”
Yesterday, the 35-year-old sat on the bench before the Three-member Criminal Court of Volos, facing the charges of illegal access to an information system or data and their subsequent use.
In his apology, he claimed that he committed the aforementioned acts out of panic and … recklessness, as he was ashamed to admit to the village that he had not yet managed to get his degree.
When asked by the Prosecutor how it was possible for him to have been reckless for three years, he could not give a satisfactory answer. He also admitted that he never apologized to the accountant whose details he misappropriated, nor to the clients he misled, which he was quick to do during the trial.
The court found him guilty of both charges and imposed a total prison sentence of 11 months suspended for three years with the right to appeal.
