The Western Attica Security Sub-Directorate proceeded to dismantle a multi-member criminal organization, which since February 2022 has been involved in at least 72 cases of theft using the employment method, with loot exceeding 1,000,000 euros.
The dismantling of the criminal organization took place last Friday morning (13/1), after an extensive police operation in various areas of Attica, where 15 main and supporting members of the organization and 1 more person were arrested for supporting a criminal.
In fact, according to a statement by the Director of the Attica Security Directorate, Brigadier General Dimitrios Davalos, during today’s presentation of the case at the offices of GADA, the first arrests were made when the members of the organization were preparing to carry out another theft in the area of Pefki.
As Mr. Davalos revealed during the operation, a member of the gang, in order to avoid his arrest, tried to hit a police officer with his car, who fell to the ground to avoid him, resulting in a broken arm.
Against the arrested members of the organization, as well as against an additional 6 members, whose details have been identified, a case file was filed – as the case may be – for membership in a criminal organization, distinguished thefts committed and attempted, violence against employees and judicial persons, dangerous driving, dangerous bodily harm and drug law.
The majority of those arrested have been brought before the authorities for related crimes, while some of them have been charged in the past – many of them criminal in nature – for crimes against property.
That’s how they acted
In terms of how they operated, the members of the organization initially found online advertisements for the sale or rent of real estate or other items. They mainly targeted elderly people, while at the same time on the appointed meeting date they tried to ensure that their prospective victim would be alone at home.
Then they usually appeared as a couple and combined with the professional status they presented, they took care to win the trust of the seller or tenant, discussing social issues. Then, under various pretexts, they usually isolated the victim on the balcony of the house, so that their accomplices who were waiting outside could enter it without being noticed.
It is worth noting that in their communications they used mobile phones registered in the names of non-existent foreigners (straw people), which they changed regularly, while they conversed in their own dialect.
From the searches carried out in a total of 14 houses in Ano Liosia, Keratsini, Piraeus and Kallithea, the following were found and confiscated: 7 cars, scales and 13 nylon packages with 17.3 grams of cannabis, 24 mobile phones and SIM cards, bank cards, OPAP cards and Casino, clothing used in the thefts, €28,565.5, litmus, gold jewelry and watches, 6 gold pound and 10 gold pound bracelets.
Those arrested were taken to the competent prosecutor’s office, while investigations continue into their involvement in additional cases.
