After a police chase, three young men were arrested for stealing catalysts from parked vehicles in Thessaloniki.
Together with their accomplice, whose details have been identified and are being sought, they are accused of removing three catalytic converters from an equal number of vehicles in the area of Toumba yesterday morning. Ahead of a police check, they sped up to escape, breaking red lights and driving on one-way streets.
Three of them were stopped and arrested. It is an 18-year-old Greek man and two Bulgarian citizens, 27 and 18 years old, who are being brought to the criminal prosecution prosecutor with the case file against them.
Why do they steal catalysts?
Catalytic converter theft has become a scourge in recent times. The reason gangs steal them is because the inside of the catalyst is coated with precious metals such as platinum, rhodium and palladium.
As experts point out, depending on the car and the catalyst, the would-be thief will make up to 150 euros by selling the metals to “scrap” businesses. On the other hand, the damage they cause to the car is estimated at hundreds of euros.
