Trial for Mati: In high tones the examination of Konstantopoulou – “Those who had to take responsibility, protected themselves and each other”

In high tones with rebuttals, withdrawal of advocates and defenses the examination of the former Speaker of the Parliament Zoi Konstantopoulou continued for a third sessionin the trial for the tragedy in Mati.

The witness, who was called after a lawsuit she had filed a few days after the fire, caused strong reactions during her examination from the defense lawyers, some of whom left the room, while others announced that when the examination of Mrs. Konstantopoulou will request that the court not take into account her testimony. In the reactions of the defenders, residents of Mati reacted who were watching the meeting who shouted to the defense that they want to hear Mrs. Konstantopoulou’s testimony.

According to Mrs. Konstantopoulou, in the case of the tragedy “even today the background rages and the motives are serious and concern former and current high-ranking persons”. The witness, referring to a “concealment” of the responsibilities, complained that the partner of the defendant in the trial, former regional governor of Attica Renas Dourou, was approaching victims of the deadly fire as a representative of the region on the sidelines of the trial.

Mrs. Konstantopoulou made a special reference to the then Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, speaking of “badly played theater over the corpses”, as the witness said:

“From noon that day, the fire in Kineta was considered a major issue. When there is a danger 4 of fire in Attica, no one leaves the fire. The prime minister, in the middle of the progress of the fire in Kineta, goes to receive an award with Zaev. When the fire breaks out in Parnitha, everyone must be “armed with a lance”. At another point in her examination, responding to the strong reactions from defense lawyers, Mrs. Konstantopoulou stated that they are trying to prevent her from referring to the dimension of the case concerning the cover-up operation: “Even after the tragedy those who had to undertake rescue and responsibilities, were concerned with protecting themselves and each other sacrificing various to carry out this plan. To this day, the background in this case rages and the motives are serious and concern former and current high-ranking persons. Stefanos Kolokouris became the leader and was responsible for the fires in Evia, (he retired in January 2022) Christos Lambris who is also accused is today a chief of staff in the Fire Department.
