Double pursuit of migrant smugglers in Kos by the Coast Guard – They immobilized them with shots

Two incidents involving shots by the Coast Guard against Turkish speedboats took place today in the maritime area of ​​Kos at 19:00 and 19:30 respectively.

Men of the Greek Coast Guard, during their patrol, spotted speedboats that had set off from the Turkish coast towards the island of Kos.

The Greek Coast Guard used light and sound signals in order to stop the speedboats, however, they made repeated attempts to ram the LS-ELAKT patrol vessel, resulting in warning shots being fired from the Greek side.

A chase ensued and shots were fired at the outboard engines of the boats to immobilize them.

The operators were arrested.

They were speedboats carrying migrants, 20 in the first incident and 17 in the second.

On the sidelines of the incident, the Minister of Shipping, Yiannis Plakiotakis, emphasized the following in a statement:

The officers of the Coast Guard once again proved their effectiveness in guarding our maritime borders.

The arrest of three traffickers is another success and another blow to the ruthless circles that exploit our unfortunate fellow human beings, exposing their lives to mortal danger“.​

Evening hours today, patrol boat L.S.-EL.AKT. being on a scheduled patrol, spotted a suspicious speedboat moving at high speed in the sea area “THERMA” n. Kos.

The patrol vessel L.S.-EL.AKT. he used light and sound signals to immobilize it, with negative results.

A pursuit followed, with the operator of the T/X boat making repeated attempts to ram the patrol boat LS-EL.AKT., while the crew of the LS-EL.AKT. fired warning shots in a safe area, with negative results.

Afterwards, the crew of the ship L.S.-EL.AKT. fired precision shots at the outboard engines, in accordance with the rules of engagement, resulting in the immobilization of the speedboat and the arrest of two (02) foreign operators, alleged traffickers of the remaining twenty (20) foreigners.

Also, in the evening hours today in the same sea area (“THERMA” n. Kos), another speedboat was detected moving suspiciously and at high speed without responding to the use of light and sound signals by the LS-EL.AKT patrol boat .

And in this case, a pursuit followed, with the operator of the T/X boat attempting to ram the patrol boat LS-EL.AKT., as a result of which warning shots were fired in a safe area, with negative results.

Afterwards, the crew of the ship L.S.-EL.AKT. fired precision shots at the outboard engines, in accordance with the rules of engagement, resulting in the immobilization of the speedboat and the arrest of one (01) foreign operator, alleged to be the trafficker of the remaining seventeen (17) foreigners.
