Tselentis on SKAI: Why the earthquake in Turkey is not related to Greece

by

Tselentis: “The post-seismic sequence will last months, and will have events of 6.5 maybe even 7, you understand what this means for the burdened buildings, it is a tragic situation”

“I am afraid that the victims of the earthquake in Turkey will exceed 1,000” Akis Tselentis, the director of the Geodynamic Institute, emphasized to SKAI and Atariastou, who explained that the possibility that it is related to Greece is negligible.

“I went to the area seven years ago and saw that the infrastructure was in poor condition, even new houses, built supposedly according to Turkey’s latest anti-seismic regulation, were badly built, so the casualties will be much more. In the meantime, the post-seismic sequence will last months, and will have events of 6.5 maybe even 7, you understand what this means for the burdened buildings, it is a tragic situation” said Mr. Tselentis. “We had collapses and at a distance of 100 kilometers you understand the quality of the constructions there” he pointed out.

Explaining why the earthquake is not related to Greece, he noted that there is the African plate, which strikes the Arabian plate to the east. The Arabian plate is separated from Turkey by a fault. The earthquake occurred on this fault. This rift has nothing to do with it with the fault of northern Anatolia which also affects the Greek area because it reaches the northern Aegean.

“The possibility that it will affect Greece is very small, even negligible, it is far away and has a different direction. “If it was on the North Anatolia faultthen yes we would have an issue, like in ’99” he declared.
