They pretended to be representatives of the Armed Forces and emptied the accounts of pharmacists and shopkeepers

In deconstruction multi-member criminal organizationpolice officers of the Property Rights Protection Department of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate proceeded when, in the context of an intensive and thorough investigation, they verified the action of its members regarding the commission of fraud through electronic transactions.

Items identified 11 involved in the circuit. These are Roma, connected, as the case may be, by family ties, aged between 21 and 44 years, who, according to the investigation, during the period January – March 2022, acting jointly and with a different composition each time, committed 19 frauds against the owners of commercial stores and pharmacies.

Acting in areas of Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras, Arcadia, Kozani, Agrinio, Imathia, Halkidiki, Ioannina and Grevena, they managed to extract the total sum of 638,693 euros.

Impersonating representatives of Security Forces or Armed Forces, they communicated by phone with their potential victims and were ordering large quantities of pharmaceutical products. Then, after securing their bank account number, they texted them a hyperlink which they should follow. This link led them to an environment identical to that of the banks that maintained the accounts, and after registering the personal codes in order for the banking transaction to proceed electronically, the perpetrators gained access to the accounts of the victims.

Characteristic of their modus operandi was the continuous transfer and distribution of the sums of money removed to more bank accounts, in order to lose their tracks and mislead the Authorities.

It is reported that, six of the perpetrators have also engaged the police authorities in the past for related crimes.

The file will be submitted to the competent Prosecutor.
