The Digital Patient File, one of the major steps in the digitization of public health for the benefit of citizens, is expanding and offering new services of digital registration of 431 laboratory tests to citizens. This new chapter of the Digital Patient File was presented today during a meeting held by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the Maximos Palace.

The Digital Folder, located in the application MyHealth app, it now includes, in addition to medical referrals and digital appointments with the personal doctor, the tests the citizen has undergone.

It facilitates both patients and treating physicians, as it allows seamless access to a file of valuable information for the management of each case, without requiring the citizen to bother in health unit secretaries or carry paper files with diagnoses and medical results.

“It is a very important initiative that we are announcing today, following important interventions that we have made on the front of digitization of health and I believe it will be highly appreciated by all MyHealth users and obviously by doctors as well. Because the purpose was and always is for the attending physician, and I would say especially the personal physician, to be able to have full access to the patient’s history, which obviously becomes much easier through such digital tools”, said the Prime Minister during the presentation, made by the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris and the Minister of State and Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

“Our goal here really is to be able to be pioneers, because digital health and new digital technologies open a completely new window for us, not only in how to simplify the process itself of the patient’s contact with the health system, not he runs back to the medical center, to the diagnostic center, to the hospital, to get an examination. This is the obvious. But mainly in the combination of various applications that will allow us to have more control over our own behavior so that we can live, overall, more healthily”, noted Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

A new e-tool in the citizen service

In its second phase of development, the infrastructure of the Digital Patient Record supports it integration 431 laboratory tests, which correspond to more than 90% of the daily volume of tests. Within the next months, imaging tests (mammograms, x-rays, etc.) will also be included, with the result that the coverage will exceed 92%.

The File will be “enriched” by hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centers through gov.gr (myhealth.gov.gr) or, alternatively, through the MyHealth mobile phone application, where citizens will be able to issue test results and hospitalization certificates or visit.

In the first stage of the implementation of the File, more than 55 public hospitals across the territory are supported, while the digital repository of examinations, diagnoses and certificates tentatively covers the period from September 1, 2022, already including almost 3.5 million documents.

In the full development of the system, all public and private health structures will be covered, a process that is expected to be completed within 2023, while the history of examinations and hospitalizations will go back several years.

Greece was one of the few countries internationally that did not have a single digital health file to which the citizen and the doctor have access to see their history, and which “follows” the patient, regardless of the structure or hospital where the examinations were carried out or the nursing.

The implementation of the Digital Patient File follows a series of initiatives for the digitization of care and prevention services, such as immaterial prescriptions, digital appointments, the “Eleftheria” operation for free vaccination against Covid-19, the digital certificate of vaccination for Covid and the digital Covid test certificates.

As part of the maximum synergy between these digital infrastructures, the prescription system accessed by doctors will interoperate with the test repository so that the personal or treating doctor can, with the patient’s consent, access his history, without the citizen presenting anything.

“I am sure that the users of MyHealth will increase significantly, as besides – let me emphasize – we have already proven that through electronic prescribing – which was an innovative system for its time, which we have greatly streamlined – but also through the entire digital management of the vaccination process, there is also a much greater familiarity of the citizens with the technology surrounding these issues”, added the Prime Minister.

“The patient’s digital file is now being created. We have all the information in the file. This makes it much easier for the attending physician, and especially the personal physician, to have the file fully updated every time. As you understand, in the new plan that we have for integrated health care, we have the possibility from the beginning, from the preventive examinations, the Primary Health Care, our hospitals, as a whole, to have a complete follow-up in a very simple way, both from the doctor as well as the citizen”, noted the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris.

“In fact, we connect in a central system, with a single standard, all fields of the exams. They enter automatically and we have interoperability, as we have overall in the state, we have it here as well, as a central logic of the infrastructure. The goal is to put an end to the bureaucracy of health, to avoid unnecessary visits to the secretaries of health units. In this way, we eliminate the need to circulate paper exams”, said the Minister of State and Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

The repository of tests and hospitalization certificates has been implemented by IDIKA. The Ministry of Health was responsible for the operational integration of hospitals into the system. The Ministry of Digital Governance had the coordinating role at the technical and operational level. The project has joined and is financed by the Recovery Fund.

The provision of the documents through the gov.gr web portal was implemented by the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EDYTE S.A.-GRNET).

The meeting led by the Prime Minister was attended by the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris, the Minister of Digital Governance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the Minister of State Akis Skertsos, the Deputy Minister of Health Mina Gaga, the Deputy Minister of Health Zoi Rapti, the Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Theodoros Livanios, the Secretary General of Health Services Ioannis Kotsiopoulos, the General Secretary of Primary Health Care Marios Themistokleous, the Managing Director of IDIKA Niki Tsouma, the Director of the Special Office of the Minister of Digital Governance Konstantinos Hambidis, the Associate of the Minister of Digital Governance Apostolos Papadopoulos and the Director of the office of the Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Kostas Tsantidis
