Trial for the Eye – Konstantopoulou’s testimony: “No one gave the residents a chance to save themselves”

“The absence, the indifference and the criminal omission were enormous… The mockery that was staged after the disaster is proof of the full awareness that they had huge responsibilities” testified today the former Speaker of the Parliament

“They were busy with the fiestas ahead of the exit from the memorandums that was scheduled for August 20, 2018 and they had a “wrong” in their shift,” said Ms. Zoe Konstantopoulou, who completed her testimony today, at the trial for the tragedy in Mati before the Three-member Misdemeanor Court.

The former speaker of the Parliament and a lawyer, one of the first citizens to file a lawsuit for the attribution of responsibilities, told the Court that the case is being considered by the Justice “in a piecemeal fashion”, as the criminal trial has been limited to a misdemeanor.

During her examination by advocates of the victims, the former speaker of the Parliament said that that afternoon “There was no readiness in land and air means and no kind of response to the responsibility they had and for which a bell had rung since the day before as the authorities knew the data”.

The witness reported that no one was properly activated. “They didn’t even give them a chance to save themselves. They didn’t even give them twenty minutes so they wouldn’t burn. The absence, the indifference and the criminal omission were enormous and in retrospect they try in a thousand ways to save themselves. No one gave them a chance to save themselves and those around them. The mockery that was staged after the disaster is proof of the full awareness that they had huge responsibilities.. So many people were burned inside Athens. The residents were consciously condemned … And in fact at a time when there was an active mechanism operating in the fire of Kineta”.

Referring to the “shrouding of responsibilities”, she reiterated during today’s meeting that all those responsible for the nightmarish events that took place in Mati on July 23, 2018, “indulged in blame-shifting, attempting to present the residents of Mati, who count and they will count their wounds for the rest of their lives.”

The witness and head of a political party, emphasized that what she mentions is also valid at the present time and invoked the “provocative” position of the Legal Council of the State which “in the context of the administrative trial assigns 95 percent responsibility to the residents”, as said Mrs. Konstantopoulou.

Citing the memorandum of the Legal Advisers of the State that was submitted in the context of the administrative trial, Mr. Vassilis Kapernaros, attorney-at-law of Varvara Voukaki Fitrou, who mourns the loss of her husband and two children in the fire, said that it states that the operational readiness of the of aerial vehicles “was annihilated due to the inability to get water from the sea due to strong winds”. The advocate stated that all these are “concoctions after the fact” characterizing the NSK document as “shameful.

Today’s meeting was held under harsh conditions with intense cold as the auditorium, which is an amphitheater, has no heating. The trial agents watched the proceedings wearing their coats.

Several of the advocates commented on the fact that no care has been taken for the “dignified development of the process” regarding a national tragedy.
