The Blessed Metropolitan Germanos, formerly of Ilia, served the Holy Metropolis of Ilia as its head for 41 years and handed over the baton to Athanasios Bachos, who was enthroned last November.
The Blessed Metropolitan, formerly of Ilias Germanos (real name Ioannis Paraskevopoulos of Georgios and Constantine) was born in Kardamas of Ilias on February 24, 1932 where he finished Primary School. In 1946, he enrolled in the Seven-Class Ecclesiastical School of Corinth and in 1953 in the Theological School of the University of Athens, graduating in February 1958.
After enlisting, he served for 30 months in the Army and the Air Force, as a reserve Lieutenant Commander.
On November 8, 1960, he was ordained a monk at the I. Monastery of Panagia Skafidias by Metropolitan Ilias Germanon and was renamed Germanon. On November 20 of the same year he was ordained a Deacon at the Holy Church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian Kardamas and on December 6 an Elder at the Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos Pyrgos under Metropolitan Ilias Germanos, ordained Archimandrite.
He served for a short time as a Vicar in the Parishes of Vrana – Bartholomew and Skourochori and in September 1961 he was appointed regular Preacher and General Hierarchal Commissioner, Protosigello, non-existent Protosigello.
In March 1979 he was appointed First Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece and on October 1, 1981 he was elected Metropolitan of Ilia.
From the ordination of His Eminence
On October 3, 1981, he was ordained Bishop at the I. Naon Ag. Dionysius the Areopagite of Athens under the Blessed Archbishop SERAPHEIM and on October 24th he was enthroned in the I. Church of Agios Nikolaos Pyrgos, deacon of the High Priesthood.
Last August, with a letter to the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Jerome and the Holy Synod, which was accepted on September 5, 2022.
His last Divine Liturgy as Metropolitan of Ilia was performed on October 3, 2022, and on November 14, he handed over the Episcopal throne to his successor and close collaborator throughout these years, Athanasios II, as the Vicar of the Holy Metropolis of Ilia.
