Further investigations are expected to follow, while currently, since the victim’s 40-year-old son is of known residence, there are no conditions for the issuance of an arrest warrant
The pan-Hellenic sensation was caused by yesterday’s revealing report by “Demokratiki” about the criminal prosecution for manslaughter in a calm state of mind of the bio-wrestler Giorgos Kariotis last June in the Medieval City of Rhodes against his 40-year-old son Evangelos Koulianos of Spyros and the issuance of an order with which he was forbidden to leave the country.
This was preceded on Friday morning by the submission of a case file to the Criminal Prosecutor’s Office of Rhodes by the Security Sub-Directorate of Rhodes according to which the perpetrator of the heinous crime is “Vangelis” who moved the pan-Hellenic public through successive broadcasts of Aggeliki Nikoloulis (“Light in the Tunnel”) where he requested her assistance in speeding up the investigations, locating and arresting the perpetrator!
No arrest warrant was issued for the young man.
He categorically denies what is attributed to him and speaks of a conspiracy that was set up against him.
According to the information of “demokratiki”, the order of the Criminal Prosecutor of Rhodes, Mrs. Maria Papagiannidou, has a validity period of 15 days from its issuance.
Ms. Prosecutor is expected to submit a proposal to the Council of Misdemeanors of Rhodes for the issuance of a decree that will extend the ban on exiting the accused’s country until the day of his apology before the regular Investigator of Rhodes in which the case file that has been filed is pending since the day before yesterday .
In the meantime, other investigative acts are expected to follow by order of the regular Investigator, while currently, as the same information states, given that the 40-year-old is of known residence, there are no conditions for the issuance of an arrest warrant.
In the order of the Prosecutor, the following are mentioned as reasons for the decision to order the 40-year-old to be banned from leaving the country:
“Because the accused denies his act, which took place on 13.6.2022 at the expense of his father, Kariotis Georgiou Christos, born in the year 1947, in the house of the latter, on Irinis Street no. 8, in the Old Town of Rhodes which according to the accusation he studied, planned and executed in a calm state of mind in a cruel way (by strangulation) and with a financial motive, against his close elderly relative and tried to cover it up in various ways, namely carrying it out wearing gloves, staging a robbery, pretending to third parties that he was calling and talking to the victim while he was already dead, and attempting to manipulate witnesses (3 names are mentioned) into not testifying or changing their testimony regarding incriminating evidence.” .
What emerged from the police investigation
As the “Democratiki” reveals today, the police evaluated a series of elements after many months of painstaking investigations in order to file a case against the 40-year-old, whom they consider to be the perpetrator of the crime.
The findings of the police were such that they led the Prosecutor to prosecute the 40-year-old as the nuanced evidence was deemed sufficient.
According to the information of the “demokratiki”, the police assessed, among other things, the following:
– Studying the crime scene they found that the victim was covered with a blanket, that his head was carefully placed in a towel and there was an attempt to stage a robbery.
More specifically, the 75-year-old’s hands were not tightly tied by the cord, and furthermore, he could not be suffocated by the cord because it was wrapped around his neck 4 times!
The door was also found to be open and secured with a piece of wood, which is inconsistent with the victim’s habits.
– The police believe that the robbery was staged and for the additional reason that only his wallet was taken and not a bag of money and there was no evidence of a struggle, not even a commotion (no neighbors heard anything).
– A towel with the victim’s blood was found in a freezer of the house, which was allegedly placed on top of the 40-year-old’s bag, in which there were traces of blood on the zipper. Inside the bag were also woolen gloves as it was summer.
He said that he does not know how the towel was found on top of his bag, while he justified the blood in the bag as coming from an earlier injury. He said he had the gloves from a long time ago, likewise.
– The telephone conversations were declassified and a hearing that took place and the transcripts allegedly revealed that the 40-year-old asked a colleague to change a statement he had given in which he said he had heard him talking to his father on the phone on June 14 2022 while the victim was dead! That is, he allegedly pretended to be talking to his father. Two of his colleagues even said they heard him on the phone talking to someone he called father on June 14, 2022.
He denies it and claims that he said his partner’s name which resembles the word “Father”. Police also believe he tried to manipulate another witness when he asked to meet with him secretly.
– It also emerged that in the house of the 75-year-old, prints of the 40-year-old were found on a glass that was on the wooden table of the house, on the surface of a wooden section at the bottom of the bed next to the deceased.
The police judged that the last footprint is in a place where no visitor of the house touches, while the reasoning he gave that the footprint is because he had cleaned his father’s house as the house had not been cleaned was refuted.
– From the trace of his mobile it emerged that the 40-year-old was from 00:36 on June 13, 2022 to 02:12 on the same day and from 14:34 to 17:24 in the Medieval City.
He denied that he was in the Medieval City at the time of the first spot while for the second he initially said that it was for 20 minutes to answer on the way that it was for 3 hours but he has memory gaps.
The 40-year-old reportedly also said that his 75-year-old father was wearing his pajamas when he saw him on June 13, 2022, while the victim was wearing the same clothes as those seen on video the day before!
In addition, he had said in his testimony immediately after the crime that he had seen his father at noon on June 13, 2023 and that he had entered the Medieval City on his motorbike from the Red Gate, while it emerged that he had not entered or exited from that particular point. He had even said that he had seen his father on the same day in a shop in the Medieval City but it turned out that the 75-year-old had not gone there on June 13, 2022 but the day before!
– In the meantime, information was obtained from the police and from what he had said on the show “Light in the Tunnel” by Angeliki Nikoloulis.
More specifically, the 40-year-old had testified on June 14, 2022 that he did not know if the rope around his father’s neck belonged to him, although he said on the show that he had seen it many times and that it belonged to the 75-year-old. He had stated on the show that his father had a lot of bumps while he testified that he didn’t have any bumps when he found him!
He had said that his father used to secure the door of his house, while in his testimony he had said that he always left it open.
– The fact that he had mentioned that when he met with his father they had discussed his Vespa which had a mechanical problem and was at a standstill was duly assessed, while in his testimony on June 15, 2022 he had said that on June 13, 2022 he had seen him driving the vespa!
Of great interest, as reported by the “democracy” information, is the fact that the police found that the victim entered and left the Medieval City for the last time on June 12, 2022, and since then it has not emerged from the investigation that he was released again.
