The cutting of the New Year’s pie of the winter swimmers of Heraklion almost turned into a tragedy, as two people were in danger of drowning from the currents in the sea area of Karteros!
The cutting that was accompanied by everything necessary was going smoothly on the beach of Amnissos, when suddenly the winter swimmers heard the voices of two people in the sea. The swimmers who either did not know about the underground currents in the specific area, or overestimated their strengths were in danger, as a result of which they sent out help!
As the president of the Heraklion Winter Swimmers Association, Spyros Kampaxis, explained to CRETALIVE, he heard the voices of the two swimmers and without thinking, dived to save them. One of the two, however, pulled him hard into the water, not allowing him to breathe, as a result of which he himself was in danger of drowning!
Eventually, other swimmers came and took out the two people and Mr. Kampaxis, so the bath did not turn into a tragedy on New Year’s Eve!
On the occasion of the event for the cutting of the pie, the Association of Winter Swimmers states in an announcement:
“On New Year’s Day in the area of Amnissos, the established pie cutting of the Winter swimmers of Heraklion & Gournes took place with great success and with the participation of both Associations.
The Associations wish all the participating swimmers, their families and the whole world, a happy new year with health and joy to leave the pandemic and people to dare to swim in the winter months when only health is in our body “.
