The 65-year-old, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Papageorgiou Hospital and lost the battle for life last Thursday (March 2), gives gifts of life to four patients with his death.
His family, without losing precious time and showing greatness of soul, decided to proceed with the donation of his organs, as stated in today’s announcement of the Hospital.
The process of receiving the instruments deemed suitable was completed last Saturday.
The surgical team of the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki removed the kidneys and the transplant team of the Second Ophthalmology Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at the Papageorgiou Hospital removed the corneas.
The kidney transplant was performed on Sunday, March 5, in Hippocrates, in two patients who had been undergoing hemodialysis for several years, a 49-year-old and a 33-year-old. The corneas are expected to be available to compatible recipients in the coming days.
The Administration of the Hospital expresses its warmest thanks for the donation of organs and the greatness of soul of the donor’s family.
At the same time, he thanks the staff of both the Papageorgiou Hospital and the Hippocrates Hospital, who undertook and successfully completed the organ donation procedures, under the coordination of the local coordinator of the National Transplantation Organization.
