Two arrests were made for antiquities theft in Evia and Attica.

Specifically, according to an announcement by the authorities, two Greeks, 56 and 80 years old, were arrested in the framework of the autoforo on Saturday, March 11 in Chalkida and Chalandri, by a squad of policemen from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Attica Security Directorate.

The two arrested are accused – as the case may be – of violating the legislation on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in general and on weapons.

In particular, in the context of investigating information from the Police, regarding the illegal possession of ancient objects and their disposal for the sum of 50,000 euros to an unknown buyer in the area of ​​Chalkida, a team of police officers was formed and after searches, the 56-year-old was located.

Specifically, the 56-year-old man was found at noon on Saturday, March 11, inside a vehicle in Chalkida, inside which a marble object falling under the antiquities law, with a relief representation of a horse’s head, measuring 17x20x6 cm, dating back to the Hellenistic or Roman period (3rd century BC to 2nd century AD).

As emerged from the preliminary investigation, the 56-year-old had procured the above-mentioned antiquity from an 80-year-old Greek, in order to make it available for sale.

After a search carried out at the 80-year-old’s house in Chalandri, the following objects were found and confiscated, which are being examined if they are included in the antiquities legislation: 4 Christian icons, possibly Byzantine, 7 metal rings and a number of coins.

In addition, inside the 80-year-old’s house were found and confiscated: A flash pistol, with a magazine and 4 cartridges, a carved knife with a sheath, probably silver, 37 cm long, a carved knife with a sheath, total length 35 cm, an object that resembles a caryophyllum magazine, possibly silver, approximately 18cm long, pepper spray, 4 mobile phones and 12 portable storage devices (usb). The 80-year-old, as it emerged, has been accused of similar offenses in the past. The 56-year-old’s vehicle was also confiscated as a means of storing and transporting antiquities for sale.

The arrested were taken to the Criminal Prosecutor’s Office of Chalkida.
