Work is underway to utilize the historic Baths of Thermi in Thessaloniki, which ceased to function definitively in 2008 and have since been abandoned.
At the site, work is being done to clean the three existing boreholes and control the thermal water reserve, in order to certify the water and prepare a study of the utilization of the approximately 500 acres that are owned by the municipality of Thessaloniki, but belong to the administrative boundaries of the municipality Heat.
The site was visited in the morning by the mayors of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas and Thermis Theodoros Papadopoulos, who inspected the cleaning of the three existing wells and the control of the thermal water supply.
The project’s technical advisor, Thanasis Nagoulis, explained that the aim of the ongoing work is to check the three wells that were found stopped, abandoned and looted.
“We are going to check the potential of the underground hot aquifer and also the temperatures. All three boreholes have hot water. One, which is already working, is at 37 degrees and is expected to reach 38 after three days of operation. The others are a little smaller, around 37 degrees, and the benefits are quite significant,” he noted.
The Mayor of Thermis, Theodoros Papadopoulos, said that the investigations so far show that the water from the wells seems to retain its healing properties.
