The euthanasia of the male bear is “justified by the need to protect public health and safety” in the mountainous, forested province of Trentino where an estimated 120 bears live.
Trentino authorities, after capturing the female bear that killed a young man jogging in early April, announced today that they had also taken the decision to kill a male bear that had injured a hiker in early March.
The order, signed by the president of the province, Maurizio Fugati, provides for the euthanasia of the bear named “MJ5”.
The animal, identified thanks to DNA samples it left on its victim, attacked a hiker in Rabi Valley on March 5, injuring him in the arm and head.

The decision is expected to spark fresh backlash in Italy, where animal rights groups have fiercely denounced the management of wildlife by local authorities.
On the night of Monday to Tuesday, the female bear “JJ4” was also captured, which attacked and killed 26-year-old Andrea Papi near the community of Caldes on April 5.
Local authorities wanted to euthanize the bear, but the Trento administrative court temporarily suspended that decision.
On Friday, local Trentino officials will meet with Environment Minister Gilberto Piqueto in Rome to discuss a plan to relocate dozens of bears. So far it has not been specified where the bears will be taken.
