Reduced by almost 333,000 people is the population of Greece compared to 2011 according to the 2021 census, the official data of which was released today Friday by ELSTAT. The total population of Greece has decreased by 3.11% compared to the 2011 census, while a population decrease is observed in most regions of the country, with few exceptions.

According to the 2021 census of ELSTAT, the total permanent population of Greece amounts to 10,482,487 inhabitants of which 5,356,510 are women (51.1%) and 5,125,977 men (48.9%).

The 2011 Greek census showed that the population of Greece decreased by 0.88% compared to the 2001 census, to 10,815,197 inhabitants.

This demographic trend is expected to continue if fertility rates remain low, with ELSTAT estimating Greece’s total population to drop to 9.7 million people by 2050 in this scenario.

Similarly, Eurostat estimates that without immigration, the Greek population will decrease to 9.3 million people by 2050, and to 8.9 million people with lower fertility, while Eurostat’s main scenario states 9.1 million inhabitants in 2050.

It was noted that 2011 was the first time in several decades that the country’s population declined, with this demographic trend continuing.
