The residents of Kalamia – a small livestock farming village just 10 km outside of Kozani – today also stopped the construction work of the large photovoltaic park above their village.

With a mobilization-march that started from the village square, they crossed a distance of 3 km reaching the place of work where the company’s machines have started.

Without any tensions or arguments, they stopped the work while at the same time demanding from the police who were present to check the work as the company is illegally using as a storage space for its equipment, stable facilities that were recently licensed by the Region of Western Macedonia.

The request of the residents was also supported by the Regional Governor of Western Macedonia Giorgos Kasapidis, who instructed the services of the Region to carry out an inspection and autopsy since the stable facility has received a permit for a specific use.

The president of the cultural association of the village, Antonia Kyratsou Dagioglou, emphasized that the 70 Mw PV park that occupies an area of 700 acres is designed to be built around the perimeter of the village just 150 meters from the houses.

“We ask the state and the company to proceed with a relevant modification of the zoning conditions because as it is designed, it strangles our village.”

Kalamia produces about 7 tons of milk every day. As they state, “the presence of photovoltaics in the vital space where their herds graze will cause damage, making the few units in the area unsustainable”.

The request of the residents of the Local Community of Kalamia, Kozani, regarding the cancellation of the installation of the photovoltaic park in the specific area, is supported by recent resolutions, the Regional Council of Western Macedonia, and the Municipal Council of Kozani.

In addition to the Regional Governor Giorgos Kasapidis, present at the mobilization were the deputy regional governor, deputy mayors of the municipality of Kozani, municipal and regional councilors, leaders of factions in the municipal and regional councils, MPs and candidate MPs from SYRIZA, PASOK-KINAL and the KKE.
