The river Sakuleva is a landmark for the city of Florina and a meeting point for locals and visitors.

It is also called the “river of winter” as it has more water then, while it dries up in the summer.

The intellectual world of the city gathers around the river Sakuleva, as the studios of the local painters are located there, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Florina.

The landscape, after all, has been a source of inspiration and a setting for several films by Theodoros Angelopoulos, while in combination with the neoclassical buildings along its length, it gives a special “note” to the city of western Macedonia.

Now, the ground is changing its appearance as – in the framework of the effort to upgrade the landscape – the contract for its regeneration was signed, with a budget of around 2 million euros.

The intervention area starts from the height of the Courts of Florina and extends along the river to Voukefala Street.

Specifically, the creation of new sidewalks and the widening of the existing ones along the entire length of the project, the creation of parking spaces and green spaces, the installation of urban equipment and new technology lighting, the replacement of the concrete footbridge near the Courts with a new metal one and the construction of three new pedestrian bridges. Also, the bed will be arranged, so that the flow of water is transferred away from the side walls of the river where pits have been formed with the risk of their collapse and consequently the collapse of the pavement of the riverside roads.

“With this project, we are reforming a key area for our city and contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of the residents. The regeneration of the river Sakouleva has been our priority and now we are able to see an important project being carried out and with its completion completely changing the appearance of a separate part of the city” said the mayor Mr. Giannakis.
