A supermarket on the beach of Rethymno was reduced to ashes, when under unexplained circumstances a fire broke out, which spread very quickly.

The first call to the fire service was made at around 5am on Sunday 28th May, with fire crews rushing to the scene.

Firefighters from the Perama Fire Department, the Vrissa Fire Service and the Spili Fire Department, with 5 vehicles and 14 employees, were thrown into the battle with the flames.

The fire spread quite quickly, possibly due to the flammable packaging inside the supermarket, causing the store to suffer serious material damage.

As can be seen in the photos published by neakriti.gr, the fire also spread to parked vehicles near the store.

The circumstances under which the fire broke out remain unknown so far and a preliminary investigation is being carried out.

Although the store in question is located in a residential area, no injuries were caused by the fire.
