Last Friday, the news that a paralyzed patient was able to walk normally with the help of an implant in his brain that restored communication between his brain and spinal cord made the world rounds.

The great achievement of neurobiology was made in Switzerland and was presented in the journal Nature.

A member of the biomedical research group in Switzerland was also a Greek scientist, the doctor Achilleas Laskaratos.

A graduate of the Medical School of Athens, 4 years ago he found himself in the team through a program and decided to do his doctorate there.

Mr. Laskaratos said it on his radio the moment a paralyzed man gets up and walks is very emotional for everyone.

“As the professor told us, everyone was crying – the family, the patient and the doctors.”

Scientists hope that in the future, similar operations could be used to restore mobility in the upper limbs as well as in people paralyzed after stroke or Parkinson’s disease.

As for him, he will remain abroad for the next few years to continue his specialization in Switzerland or the USA.

However, he wished that “things will come so that he can return to Greece in the future”.
