Unprecedented damage occurred with yesterday’s (29/5) extreme weather events in the cotton and corn crops of the municipality Pella.

“The crops in corn, cotton and industrial beans were almost completely destroyed and especially for the first two. We draw water from the fields. We are talking about a total disaster, while even today it is raining”, the president of the Pella Agricultural Association, Giorgos Papadopoulos, emphasizes to GRTimes.gr.

Afterwards, Mr. Papadopoulos added that the State has not made any announcement about the disasters, while in the evening the Pella Agricultural Association will hold a Council, so that decisions can be made on the next steps of the farmers.

“The problem is that it doesn’t “take” us time to sow. The cotton sowing period was theoretically until this period, i.e. the end of May, but again the risk is huge. When I water the field on the 30th of the month, I need at least 10 days to sow again,” adds Mr. Papadopoulos.

How the fields were flooded in the municipality of Pella

Based on the words of the president of the Agricultural Association of Pella, due to the frequent rains and in combination with the last burini, the fields were “filled” with water, as a result of which they cannot absorb more water. “The enormous damage was done because it rained every day and in combination with the strong gale the day before yesterday, it turned everything into a sea.” If we go to the plain, you will see how all the farmers are taking out buckets and whatever the water has from their fields”!

The cotton crops, according to farmers in the area, are among the most dynamic in the plain of Giannitsa, as a result of which the professionals are in despair, due to the great destruction in the fields that turned into… lagoons.

Finally, Giorgos Papadopoulos reports to GRTimes.gr that if the specific disasters had occurred in mid-April, there would have been some small hopes, so that the farmers would initially sow cotton and corn and then they would bear fruit “However, again the situation would be very difficult. Let’s say we decide to sow broad beans in a field previously sown with cotton. The result would probably be zero, because drugs had already been applied to the cotton, as a result of which they destroyed the seed from the bean.”
