Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the commander of the 6th health district, Yannis Karvelis, said, “until late at night, a total of 30 immigrants had been taken to the Kalamata hospital, and they are being treated”. According to Yiannis Karvelis, immigrants who are hospitalized mainly face problems of a pathological nature.
Also, as the commander of the 6th Ministry of Defense told APE-MPE, “in the area of ​​the port where the immigrants are accommodated, medical units remain, in order to provide immediate medical supervision for any incidents that require assistance, while in the same area there are also EKAV ambulances in case it is necessary to transfer an incident to the hospital”.
Regarding the care of the migrants who were rescued from the wreck of the fishing boat, the mayor of Kalamata, Thanasis Vassilopoulos, reported to APE-MPE that “the municipality has done everything necessary, in cooperation with the regional unit of Messinia, the Red Cross, volunteers, etc., for hosting the rescued, such as clothing, mattresses, and blankets, while water supply, chemical toilets, showers and tents have been installed”.
Also, as the mayor emphasized, “the local community has been sensitized and mobilized to a significant extent, providing necessary supplies to the immigrants”, while, as he added, “the evening meal was offered by a local sports club”.
