The Municipality of Thermi submits a request to declare a civil protection emergency in the areas affected by the heavy downpour of June 17, as announced after a meeting in the Municipality and an autopsy of the affected areas.

Specifically, from the autopsies it emerged that the area most affected by the heavy downpour is that of the Thermi Dam.

The damages are located in three places and in areas along the stream which brings down a large volume of water from the area of Hortiatis.

In particular, one bridge has been completely destroyed, while two others have suffered serious damage.

The dam’s spillway was also destroyed, causing water to flood surrounding areas, causing damage to roads and Irish crossings.

Yesterday the municipality of Thermi sent the first damage assessment report to the competent Directorate of Civil Protection of the Central Macedonia Region and today the second, more detailed assessment report is also being sent.

The first concern of the municipality is to clean the areas along the stream, from the transported materials carried by the rushing water.

At the same time, the damage restoration work begins immediately.

To this end, the municipality has requested the civil protection department of the Central Macedonia Region to grant special machines, necessary for these cleaning and restoration works.

The request to declare the areas in a state of civil protection emergency also includes Vasilika, where there were also damages to streams, agricultural crops and greenhouses, while there were also isolated cases of water inflow into homes and farmhouses.

In his statements, the mayor of Thermis, Theodoros Papadopoulos, said that from the very first hours when the heavy downpour broke out, in the early hours of Saturday, the crews of the municipality were in all the places where the most serious problems occurred.

At the same time, he noted that there was no serious incident involving a risk to human life, and in one case where a car was trapped at an Irish crossing in the area of the Dam, the intervention was immediate, the driver was freed and the car was towed.
