The employees speak of “very good working conditions” and “good financial benefits” in her announcement. After the “storm” of reactions and the storm of comments on social media, the employees of the well-known beach bar in Rose issued a statement, pointing out that “we are neither blackmailed nor forced to do things we don’t want to do in the course of our duties.”

The announcement:

As employees of the business for which there has been a barrage of comments, we feel the need to say the following:

We do not work under “medieval conditions” as said by mass media nor are we “blackmailed” or “forced” to do things we do not wish to do in the course of our duties. Instead:

The beach bar where we work is staffed by young people, most of whom have been working there for many years, we have fun and a willingness to work, we have a friendly atmosphere and a spirit of cooperation for common benefit, we take initiatives and share ideas that we all implement together.

We work as a team, we treat our work as our own and we all strive for the best, precisely because we have very good working conditions and good financial rewards. Our good mood goes out and is received by the visitors, which obviously would not happen if we were working in “deplorable conditions” and if our employer “exploited” and “tortured” us, as it was said.

We think this whole thing was extreme and we felt it didn’t represent us. We know who the competent authorities are so we can stand up if necessary. What has come out in the last 24 hours as a climate that prevails in our work, is not true in any case and we categorically state that our working conditions are not “medieval” conditions nor are we in “torture”, as it was said.

Fines from the Port Authority of Rhodes

It is recalled that fines for illegal occupation of marine space by floating structures were imposed by the Port Authority of Rhodes on the beach bar in the area of Ag. Marina, where in a video on social media a waiter can be seen carrying drinks and cocktails to customers almost swimming with the height of the water level reaching almost to his neck.

It is noted that on the matter, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis had instructed the port authority to carry out an audit of the operation for the legality of the constructions in the sea. According to the port authority, similar violations were also found in previous inspections on 16.06.2023 and 21.06.2023 and the relevant case files were filed.

For his part, the Minister of Labor Adonis Georgiadis had informed that a team of the Labor Inspectorate was at the store to carry out an inspection. “For the well-known incident with the waiter in Rhodes Klimakios, the local service of the Labor Inspectorate is currently conducting an audit. When the audit is completed, we will inform you about its results”, stressed Mr. Georgiadis.

What does the owner of the beach bar answer?

“I have been a businessman for 27 years, I have never had a complaint, everyone asks to come and work in my shops. Is it possible for the employee to do something like this by force? He has been my employee for 5 years. It’s an isolated event and he did this to get lucky. This kid gets 3,000 euros a month and if the customer ordered him a strong pour-boir, he went in to get it. This suit is waterproof but I know that the video was posted by a fake profile of a competitor who wanted to harm me and stigmatize my business”, is the answer of the owner of the beach bar to OPEN.

And he concludes “10 inspectors came and found everything legal. As for the side tables, they go in and out, it’s not abuse. The inspectors asked the workers if I am forcing them to enter the sea and they told them that they do it for a better porter. I don’t want to make another statement, but my employee will tell you the same.”
