“When we were evacuating the Alexandroupolis hospital we had 15 fires within 24 hours in the northern part, and while we were competing in Alexandroupolis we had to go to Dadia as well… The 15 foci cannot be a coincidence, we have also upgraded the level of investigations to find out the conditions under which the fire incidents occurred,” the representative of the fire department told SKAI and the newsroom show John the Baker.

“Everything will be checked. Just yesterday, a 48-year-old citizen was identified and arrested for arson with intent in Chalkida. While we had an ongoing fire in Artaki, we had 4 outbreaks with a two-hour shutdown. We are looking for two more people. From last Friday until today we had 516 forest events recorded under extreme circumstances, that says something,” the official noted.

“This year the fire department and civil protection has the largest fleet of aerial vehicleshe pointed out.

“We had 89. We lost a Kanander in the Karystos fire. We’ve got two more… We’re at 90 airborne right now and we’ve lost one unfortunately. We have 16,580 firefighters, permanent, five-year obligation and contract holders. Greece could of course take more, but it is not in dire straits at the level of firefighters per 1,000 inhabitants,” he noted.

Mr. Artopioos highlighted the fire protection of the houses as a critical issue close to key ecosystems together with the opening and cleaning of fire zones, which is already being done.
