The chronicle of the forced evacuation of the two Institutions that took place due to the fire that is still burning in the Prefecture of Evros, the Diocese of Alexandroupoli outlines in its relevant announcement.

“Late in the evening of Monday 21/08, the fire started to move towards the P.G. Alexandroupolis Hospital and we were quite worried because we are at a distance of less than 2km. We were in communication with the Mayor of Alexandroupoli and at 01.45 in the evening, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Alex/polis, Mr. Anthimos, gave an order to evacuate the Institutions, so that the elderly and elderly inmates could be protected. The evacuation was decided to take place towards the old nursing home and the I.N. of Metamorfosis tou Sotiros.

It was immediately organized evacuation plan of Agios Kyprianos and the Ioakimei Nursing Home… The Mayor of our city was with us from the first moment and we met with two KTEL N. Evros buses so that the ambulatory inmates could be removed quickly. The school buses of the Metropolis Nursery School were mobilized and some of their victuals we moved in stretchers and on mattresses as they were fully prostrate with the flames coming quite near the north enclosure of our Institutions.

The evacuation operation started at 02.50 in the morning of Tuesday 22/08 and ended at 06.30 in the morning. The whole of Agios Kyprianos was evacuated and 64 people stayed in the Joakimio Nursing Home in the main hall following the instructions of the Fire Department commander Mr. Koukoulomatis. A total of 155 people were moved…”.

The return of the food was decided on Wednesday and after the removal of the fire and already by the afternoon of the same day the normal operation of the two institutions had resumed.

It is noted that the Metropolitan of Alexandroupolis, Mr. Anthimos, representing all the members of the Board of Directors. of the two institutions “thanks and is grateful to the Fire Service for its fully organized actions, the Municipality of Alex/polis and personally the Mayor Mr. Ioannis Zamboukis for the assistance of the Municipality as well as his personal presence in the evacuation process” as well as the staff of the Joachimios Nursing Home and the Foundation for the Chronically Suffering “Agios Kyprianos” for the self-sacrifice they demonstrated defying “even their physical integrity, when the flames were approaching, in order to save our helpless people”.
