met today Wednesday, September 6, 2023at its second Session for the month of September, the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greeceunder the presidency of the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Mr. Ieronymos.

The Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, on the occasion of the tragic events of the last few days, expresses its support to all those tested by the extreme weather phenomena and wishes the services of the State and all the volunteers may have strength from Godto provide the necessary, and the Greek State to contribute directly to the rehabilitation of those affected. The contribution of the Church of Greece and the local Holy Metropolises is understandably taken for granted.

The Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece regarding the new police identity cards, which the responsible State has decided to issue, publishes its positions below, addressed to the holy Clergy and the pious People:

  1. The Holy Synod understands the concern of some Christiansn, that’s why he asks everyone to have confidence in the Church and Her responsible Shepherds, who fast for all issues concerning the lives of the faithful.
  2. Any opinions or reservations that are reproduced by para-religious notions about citizens’ police ID cards are not purely of Orthodox origin.
  3. The theories that the doctrine of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ is being insulted are not theologically strong from the form and content of the new police identity card, as regulated by the current Ministerial Decisions (2018, 2019, 2023). Also, the use of phrases about “electronic file” imposed by the “New Order of Things” and “globalization” has a parareligious starting point, as it does not aim to protect the individual freedoms of citizens, but implies that the Hellenic Republic, its services and the elected Government are “instruments of the Antichrist”.
  4. In 2019, the Council of State ruled on the legality of the 2018 Ministerial Decision on the new police identity card (decisions 2388/2019, 2389/2019). On the one hand, it rejected the legal disputes regarding the protection of the personality, religious conscience and personal data of the citizen, on the other hand, it partially annulled the Ministerial Decision of 2018 in terms of one of its provisions, which provided for the direct use of the identity card by citizens as card of digital governance services, as this function was not provided for by law. Since then the State complied and issued two corrective Ministerial Decisions (2019, 2023).

In any case, the judgment on the legality of the police identity card belongs to the jurisdiction of the country’s judiciary, which has already been ruled on, and concerns an administrative issue of State-citizen relations.

  5. Despite this, the matter is being studied in all its ramifications and will be referred to a future extraordinary convocation of the Hierarchy.
