When you want to build your resume for a position for which you do not have the necessary work experience or no work experience at all
Most of us have been in the position of having to write a resume and “breaking” our heads to do it as correctly as possible.
And the truth is that writing the “perfect” resume is a challenge since it acts as a marketing tool for ourselves. It highlights our skills and expertise and shows potential employers why we are the best choice for their organisation.
Do not panic.
Here are some tips to make the perfect resume even if you have very little or completely unrelated work experience to what they are asking for.
- Read carefully what they ask for
Before you rush to start writing your resume to apply for a new position, read the job description carefully. This is very important because otherwise you might not have understood exactly what this position is asking for so how are you going to convince them that you are the right fit?
Once you know who the perfect candidate is they are looking for you can start creating your own resume based on what they are asking for and what you already have.
- Emphasize what you have and not what you lack
If, for example, they ask for 2 years of experience and you don’t have it, but you have worked as an amateur (you have read, you have done seminars, you have done relevant voluntary practical work, etc.) you must mention it. And even first first. Leave your work experience behind, which might be irrelevant to what they’re asking for, and focus on what you’ve done that is more relevant to what they want.
- Use your experience properly
Mention your experience but in such a way that it seems relevant to the qualifications they are asking for. For example, if you’ve only worked in a call center and they’re asking for a secretary, instead of simply writing “I was answering incoming calls,” write about your ability to stay polite, keep your cool, and solve any problem.
You won’t lie of course, you’ll just analyze your qualifications in a different way.
- Be more creative
Most CVs are a bit boring as their structure and content are usually similar. In fact, when the recruiter sees 500-1000 resumes a day, it will be difficult to distinguish one for its diversity.
Try to make it as close as possible to your personality, to add some element of you that doesn’t seem to matter but you think it characterizes you. In general, try to stand out, in a professional way!
