There are thousands of dead animalsfrom the disastrous advance of the bad weather Daniel, on the villages of her plain of Karditsa Regional Unitdriving in despair the breeders of the affected areas.

The rural families of these areas, for decades, had and have a special love relationship – they even gave them names – with these animals, sheep, cows, goats and also the dogs that are close to the herds, as well as with the land , as they provided them with the basic income to survive.

In the past, they took care to keep large animals for plowing the fields, carrying the products, moving them, in order to ensure the livestock products for the family’s nutrition and also to ensure, from the sale of some animals, the necessities, the which was procured from the bazaar. These were the horses, donkeys, buffaloes, cows, and sheep for daily milk but also to make the year’s cheese, mizithra, yogurt, butter, and various sour cheeses. As a guide in this journey into the past, we have the book entitled “Recording and highlighting the agricultural and cultural heritage of Karditsa” published by the Historical and Folklore Research Center of Karditsa “APOLLON”. According to these figures, the people of the plain considered the pig, from which they got the fat for the daily cooking of the year, since the oil was not produced and was expensive, so they poured it with the “dropper” ». The meat of the pig was seasoned and preserved for a long time. Also, with the meat of the pig and the intestines they made sausages and cigarettes. From the pig’s stomach and its legs, the little children secured respectively a ball and the guts, with which they played for endless hours. Also, they considered chickens, ducks and geese necessary, to ensure the meat and eggs of the year. Along with all the above, many households also had pigeons, for which they built adobe pigeon houses on their property. Also, many raised rabbits and mice, which they sold in the bazaar, after first keeping some for their family. Every rural house necessarily had the guardian-angel of the house, the dog, and the mouse hunter, the cat.

As emphasized to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, the president of the Center for Historical and Folklore Research “APOLLON” of Karditsa, and author of the above book, Vasiliki Koziou-Kolofotia, referring to the current situation in Thessaly said, among other things: “Unfortunately, all these livestock animals that ensured the household economy and genuine and healthy products for their family, as well as those of the many model livestock units that many young people set up with painstaking effort to remain in their villages, Daniel, who found our place unfortified, the disappeared beneath the muddy waters along with their labors and dreams. I wish the young farmers not to be disappointed, not to leave their land. To stay in the vast and fertile Thessalian plain and to struggle by demanding from the state the self-evident: the necessary anti-flood works in order to be able to give life to the “excellent” according to Thucydides, “blissful” according to Strabo and “fruitful” according to Euripides Our Thessaly”.
