Nine people were handcuffed by the Police in Athens and Thessaloniki, before the start of the football matches of the weekend. More specifically, in New Philadelphia, yesterday Sunday, six people were arrested, while in Toumpa, in Thessaloniki, three people were arrested.

According to the announcement of the Police, the arrests were made for, as the case may be, violence against employees and for violations of the laws on sports, weapons and drugs. Sparklers, smoke machines, folding knives and quantities of narcotics were seized.

The Greek Police continues intensively and systematically the effort to prevent and deal with violence with a sporting background, in order for sporting events to be a safe space for all citizens.

In the context of football matches in Nea Philadelphia Attica as well as Toumpa Thessaloniki, yesterday, Sunday, September 17, 2023, intensive checks were carried out by special teams of the Hellenic Police, for the prevention of violence with a sports background, during which a total of -9- people were arrested .

In particular, in New Philadelphia, -6- people were arrested, against whom a case file was filed, as the case may be, for violence against employees and violations of sports and weapons laws.

Specifically, the above persons were located during checks outside the stadium and a total of 6 hand flares, 4 smoke generators and 2 folding knives were found in their possession and confiscated. In fact, one of the arrested, during the control, pushed the police officers and kicking them, unsuccessfully tried to escape.

At the same time, -3- people were identified and arrested in Thessaloniki, for a case-by-case violation of the laws on drugs and on sports, as a nautical torch, drug tablets as well as a grater and a quantity of cannabis were found and confiscated in their possession.
