Police officers of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Directorate of Security of Thessaloniki proceeded to arrest a 71-year-old man, accused of violating the Legislation regarding “Sanction of the Code of Legislation for the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in General”.

In particular, an organized operation was carried out in the area of ​​Xanthi, during which a search was carried out at the house of the arrested person, in the presence of a judicial official, where a copper ring dating from the late Byzantine – post-Byzantine times (1204-1830) was found and confiscated, which falls under the protective provisions of the Law concerning the “Validation of the Code of Legislation for the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in General”, according to the opinion of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Xanthi.

In addition, a silver coin from Byzantine times, a bronze coin from post-Byzantine times, a large bronze medal, a corroded bronze coin of small dimensions were found, which need further investigation, according to the opinion of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Xanthi.

Finally, a number of documents and maps depicting locations and points of archaeological interest, two metal detectors and four books concerning ancient coins were confiscated.

The arrested person, with the file filed against him, will be taken to the competent judicial authorities.
