SKAI made a sensational revelation about the “lockdown” at OAKA. Three years ago, in 2020, the same scholars submitted a report that raised the issue of severe deterioration due to lack of maintenance. In the meantime, for three years, matches and events were held normally…

Thus the OAKA is led by the shine to decline and temporary lock-up, since no maintenance work had been done for 19 years now – as evidenced by the TAIPED study.

A five-year investigation by the First Instance Prosecutor into the maintenance of the facilities has already begun.

As Yiannis Souliotis reported in the central news bulletin, the report that the government currently has in its hands is not the first, since in the summer of 2019 the Ministry of Infrastructure had commissioned the same Greek technical company, DOMI SA, to carry out a survey on the inspection and maintenance of the entire Olympic Stadium facility. The research was completed in October 2020. The study was then submitted to the General Secretariat of Sports and the Ministry of Infrastructure.

This particular report reached two main conclusions about the stadium drain.

A) During the inspection of the German Bust in the period 2007-2008, no stability problems were detected. The inspection was carried out in view of the final acceptance of the stadium by the Greek government

B) However, in 2020 the Greek company DOMI SA identified more serious problems due to lack of maintenance which, as it stated, should be addressed as soon as possible, sounding the alarm. These are oxidations, paint problems and various bad workmanship.

However, a new study was assigned in November 2022 to the same company, DOMI SA and was completed in the period August-September 2023 and it only concerned the Calatrava metal construction. The study concluded that the metal structure does not meet the minimum allowable level of static adequacy. In fact, the problem was identified by the construction of the metal roof which, as he mentioned, does not meet safety standards.

Questions

  1. Why was OAKA working normally despite detecting problems?
  2. Between the two inspections (2020-2023) were there any maintenance – restoration works?
  3. Why hadn’t the German company detected problems that were later detected?

The Technical Chamber of Greece together with a group of experts undertook to evaluate the assumptions and conclusions of the study in order to run the maintenance and repair procedures. According to the schedule, the cycle track could be reopened by 2024, while the timetable for repairs to the Olympic stadium remains unknown. They are giving the Ministry of Sports a battle against time for the relocation of leagues – sports clubs – without, however, finding a solution for everything.

For his part, the Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis noted that “for the football team of Panathinaikos I have personally committed, and after consultations, that there will be any help the team needs”.
